Bank ATMs, including BCEL, and licensed exchange counters cluster along Sisavangvong Road. ATMs dispense Lao kip and usually charge a fee per withdrawal, with a limit on the amount. Exchange counters accept major currencies such as US dollars, Thai baht and euros. Keep some small notes for tuk-tuks, markets and temple donations.

In the UNESCO heritage zone — The old-town peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1995). Building height, materials and signage are regulated to protect its character.
